Balcony Club Will Be Jazzing It Up

For 10 More Years!!

The Balcony Club was built and opened by Burke and Jo Barr in 1988 as an adjunct to The Lakewood Theatre in Old East Dallas. Originally only accessible through the theatre, stairs were later added for access from the street. A fee of $250 to be a member was dropped soon after opening.

After the passing of the Balcony Club’s current owner last December, neighbors began to wonder if the longtime jazz and blues venue would keep entertaining the neighborhood from its perch above the Lakewood theater.  Fortunately, just days before his death, former owner Teddy Davey signed a 10-year lease for the space, which is now run by his wife, Lorena. This summer, Balcony Club will turn 30, and if all goes to plan it will keep turning out live music on its intimate stage until it turns 40.

Charity Spotlight

The Lakewood Service League

Founded in 1982, the Lakewood Service League was formed by a group of women who wanted to improve the conditions of Lakewood Park so that the children of the neighborhood would have a safe, enjoyable place to play. Working in partnership with the Dallas Parks and Recreation Department, this group of women not only contributed funds, but also volunteered many hours of exhausting labor and converted what was nothing more than a muddy creek bottom into a lush, beautiful park. Since that time, this revitalized park has enlightened the lives of many area children while enhancing the value of the surrounding property. Today, Lakewood Park serves as the key-stone to the Lakewood Service League: it is a beautiful reminder of the life-enriching contributions the League can make to the neighborhood through the determination, commitment and volunteerism of the League members.

Thirty-Six years later, the League continues to serve the needs of the East Dallas community by providing countless hours of support to our local partner organizations. Those partner organizations fulfill a wide range of community needs by providing primary care for both young and old, educational enrichment for pre-school through high school students, employment counseling and placement, cultural and recreational programs for all ages and economic levels, and basic necessities of food, clothing and shelter to those in need.
